Derek works in Southport. He taught in secondary and sixth form education for nearly forty years, encouraging students to work with local and national artists through studio practice. In 1993, he was the team coordinator for Anthony Gormley during the creation of ‘Field for the British Isles, installing the work at Tate Liverpool and St. Helens College. He became a member of the Manchester Academy of Fine Arts in 2004, serving on its council for four years and continues to exhibit with them regularly. His work is referenced from experiencing places, surfaces, discarded items and the ever changing light and weather. From this, he uses a variety of media to build surfaces which attempt to capture some fleeting memory of these encounters.
