SUMMARY:Discover Sunday: Brian Whitmore Calligraphy
DESCRIPTION:Discover Sunday: Brian Whitmore Calligraphy \nFollowing on from his successful art installation in the Walled Garden in Autumn 2023\, Brian Whitmore is returning to Norton Priory to run a drop-in workshop as part of the Discover Sunday programme of activities. Themed to reflect the environmental messaging that is accompanying the Gaia installation\, this is an opportunity to create sublime and thoughtful artwork to take home. \nAttendees of the Calligraphy Workshop\, which is inspired by Luke Jerram’s Gaia Installation\, will have the opportunity to learn creative mark making and pen control\, whilst also dipping into learning and using the Uncial Script. These newfound skills will be then used to create a calligraphic circular globe (with the option to make it into a finger puppet)\, scribed with a meaningful Earth quotation… \nThere is no additional charge for this activity\, which is included in General Admission prices (and free for members of Norton Priory Museum and Gardens). \nTickets are valid throughout the day and include the opportunity to see Gaia\, which is displayed in the atrium of the museum visitor centre. To take part\, book General Admission tickets for Sunday 14th January 2024 via the Art Ticket website.

SUMMARY:In the Mix
DESCRIPTION:Coming up ‘In the Mix’ at Platform Gallery in Clitheroe\,  a colourful display by one of our Craft Open 23 prize winners Beverley Coleclough. Beverley’s solo show will be on display from Thursday 23rd November until 28th November. \n“During the summer of 2001\, I booked a few weeks escape to tour the Northern part of Australia… my eyes were opened to another world of light and colour! That was ‘it’… it was so hard to return to teaching and my lecturing job in the Art Department at Wigan College. I immediately started my ‘cunning plan’ of escape and in 2003\, at the tender age of 58\, eons too late for puberty and even the menopause\, I took a 6 month sabbatical from teaching and ran away to Australia to find myself… well not really. I booked a work space for my residency with Central Craft and started first in Darwin\, quickly moving down to Alice Springs where I worked for the rest of my escape. Papers were my starting point\, easy to get hold of and transport. I had no plan I just started working and experimenting.” – Excerpt for Beverley Coleclough’s artist statement.

SUMMARY:Gladly Beyond
DESCRIPTION:Gladly Beyond\, an exhibition by Ten Obstructions\, an exhibition of painting\, drawing\, textile and installation. The exhibition will take place at Rogue Artists’ Studios Project Space\, 2-6 Barrass Street\, Openshaw\, Manchester\, M11 1PU from Saturday 3rd June – Sunday 25th June. Opening event Saturday 10th June 12-5pm. Exhibition open Saturday and Sunday 12-4pm\, weekdays by appointment 07912 378787. \nGladly Beyond journeys literally\, visually and imaginatively through time and through space. It explores the possibilities of visual representation and it delves into the nature of perception. Journeys of the imagination take us from fabled and mythic magical gardens to speculative fictions\, leaving behind the fictions that justify existing inequalities and the inexorable march of climate change: travelling through space or travelling through time.  \nMaya Chowdhry’s interactive experience – temp/o~reality explores the measuring of time through objects\, as you travel through the idea that if time exists as humans have delineated\, then it’s running out. In Garden Meditations Jane Fairhurst explores light through colour\, form and texture and the subject of plants\, specifically garden plants. In On the Periphery Sarah Feinmann is fascinated by edgeland spaces that have been abandoned and left to deteriorate over time. It is the overlooked in the landscape that inspires her work.   She records these aspects on her journeys\, using photography to document these moments of change and transition. In Sabrina Fuller’s The Power of Fragility the rich and powerful have departed in a fleet of spaceships\, taking with them the beautiful and the functional. Those left behind unite around a single\, radical task: to care for the planet and for each other. In Not In Safekeeping: Missing Claire Hignett aims to construct 200+ knitted milk cartons representing the 200+ children missing from Home Office asylum hotels in the UK. This will be ongoing during the exhibition as part performance\, part making in public. Christoper Rainham’s Wings Become Waves is inspired by a Mesolithic child buried cocooned on a swan’s wing to be transported from this world to the next. Ian Vines’ Beyond the Horizon uses odd juxtapositions and visual trickery to question the nature of perception and the process of looking.  \nSarah Feinmann has her studio at Rogue\, and led the organisation of the exhibition. She said “With Gladly Beyond the group Ten Obstructions have embraced the opportunity for experimentation that Rogue Project Space offers.  \nTen Obstructions came together in late 2019 through bOlder\, a Castlefield Gallery artist development programme for older artists. This is their sixth group exhibition and they continue to offer one another regular support\, criticism\, encouragement and friendship.  \nImages and further information available from sabrinasusanfuller@gmail.com.
