SUMMARY:In the Mix
DESCRIPTION:Coming up ‘In the Mix’ at Platform Gallery in Clitheroe\,  a colourful display by one of our Craft Open 23 prize winners Beverley Coleclough. Beverley’s solo show will be on display from Thursday 23rd November until 28th November. \n“During the summer of 2001\, I booked a few weeks escape to tour the Northern part of Australia… my eyes were opened to another world of light and colour! That was ‘it’… it was so hard to return to teaching and my lecturing job in the Art Department at Wigan College. I immediately started my ‘cunning plan’ of escape and in 2003\, at the tender age of 58\, eons too late for puberty and even the menopause\, I took a 6 month sabbatical from teaching and ran away to Australia to find myself… well not really. I booked a work space for my residency with Central Craft and started first in Darwin\, quickly moving down to Alice Springs where I worked for the rest of my escape. Papers were my starting point\, easy to get hold of and transport. I had no plan I just started working and experimenting.” – Excerpt for Beverley Coleclough’s artist statement.

SUMMARY:Discover Sunday: Brian Whitmore Calligraphy
DESCRIPTION:Discover Sunday: Brian Whitmore Calligraphy \nFollowing on from his successful art installation in the Walled Garden in Autumn 2023\, Brian Whitmore is returning to Norton Priory to run a drop-in workshop as part of the Discover Sunday programme of activities. Themed to reflect the environmental messaging that is accompanying the Gaia installation\, this is an opportunity to create sublime and thoughtful artwork to take home. \nAttendees of the Calligraphy Workshop\, which is inspired by Luke Jerram’s Gaia Installation\, will have the opportunity to learn creative mark making and pen control\, whilst also dipping into learning and using the Uncial Script. These newfound skills will be then used to create a calligraphic circular globe (with the option to make it into a finger puppet)\, scribed with a meaningful Earth quotation… \nThere is no additional charge for this activity\, which is included in General Admission prices (and free for members of Norton Priory Museum and Gardens). \nTickets are valid throughout the day and include the opportunity to see Gaia\, which is displayed in the atrium of the museum visitor centre. To take part\, book General Admission tickets for Sunday 14th January 2024 via the Art Ticket website.

SUMMARY:Creating Place II exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Creating Place II\nThe Creating Place II exhibition at The Turnpike will feature new commissions by artists Nicolette Lafonseca\, Julie McKiernan\, Helen Mather & Anna FC Smith\, and Joe Whitmore\, presenting diverse perspectives on our local heritage and environment in a series of multi-media installations. \n \nJoe Whitmore is a painter who works predominantly from life\, with a particular interest in portraits. His recent practice documents the lives of local people and landscapes in paint to reveal the character of his town. He has travelled extensively including Hong Kong\, Poland\, and New Zealand. Joe will be working with the Drumcroon Collection to present a series of portraits inspired by key works from the collection. \nAnna FC Smith is a multimedia artist who explores social history\, folk culture\, and ritual through historical and anthropological research. Helen Mather is an artist whose practice involves community engagement with communal making\, discussion\, and collaboration at its centre. Together\, their work in Creating Place II will involve exploring the new green heritage of post-industrial landscapes; how we think about these spaces now\, and how they become part of our contemporary civic identity. \n\nNicolette Lafonseca is a creative polymath who uses a variety of visual art media with storytelling at the core. Her project will focus on natural pigments which can be found in the local environment of Leigh\, typically in plants that can be seen all around us\, but also from other sources such as soils\, brick dust\, and rust. In the new year\, members of the local community and family groups will be invited to attend foraging walks and take part in practical workshops to help create pieces for the installation. \nJulie McKiernan is a writer who enables individuals\, community groups\, and charities to tell their stories\, express their views\, convey information and change people’s perceptions. Julie will be working with local artist Corrie Shelley on their ‘Share the Care’ project\, which will focus on care providers\, their personal stories and why they chose to work in Adult Social Care\, as well as celebrating Adult Social Care provision in Leigh. They will be interviewing care providers and inviting them to create a square for their ‘Community Care comfort blanket’. \n\nIf you are an Adult Social Care Provider in Leigh and would like to get involved\, get in touch at contact@corrieshelley.com \nWe will be hosting a ‘Meet the Artists’ week during February half term 2024 where visitors can drop-in and take part in free creative activities. \n\nTuesday 20th February 11am – 1pm: Nicolette Lafonseca\nWednesday 21st February 11am – 1pm: Joe Whitmore\nThursday 22nd February Time TBC: Anna FC Smith & Helen Mather (offsite)\nFriday 23rd February 11am – 1pm: Julie McKiernan

SUMMARY:Concrete Stuff (End of Residency exhibition)
DESCRIPTION:Concrete Stuff (End of Residency exhibition)\n\nWe’ve been honoured to be hosting artist Pierre Courtin from Angers as part of a residency programme between twin towns Angers & Wigan.\n\nJoin us for the exhibition of the work he’s created on Wednesday 26th June at 6.30pm at Cross Street Arts\n\nPierre said “During my residency\, I’ve been working on how urbanisation leaves scars on the landscape and ecosystems. Concrete engulfs everything\, leaving behind only a sense of melancholy for these new\, dead biomes. I’m trying to capture this melancholy through embedded\, dead wood. They’re like remains\, ruins or phantoms of what they were. A deformed reflection. But also signs of what they will be. They resurface from concrete\, as nature always finds its way.”

SUMMARY:Beyond Representation
DESCRIPTION:Beyond Representation: Drawing from Life and Imagination \nUnlock your creative potential by pushing the boundaries of figure drawing\, guided by the revolutionary practices of three groundbreaking artists—Max Ernst\, Hilma af Klint\, and Louise Bourgeois. This course will inspire you to move beyond conventional representation and find your unique artistic voice through imaginative and expressive drawing techniques. People with any level of artistic experience are welcome\, from total beginners to established artists. \nThrough study of each artist’s approach to drawing\, you’ll gain the confidence to break free from traditional figure drawing methods. We’ll explore how the unconscious mind\, spirituality\, and deeply personal symbolism can be harnessed to create evocative works that blend reality and imagination. \n\nMax Ernst (6th Nov): Known for his surrealist drawings\, Ernst used automatic drawing techniques to access the subconscious and explore the fantastic. We’ll experiment with surrealist methods like automatic drawing and frottage (rubbing) to discover how spontaneity and chance can lead to imaginative and otherworldly figures.\nHilma af Klint (13th Nov): A visionary of abstraction\, Hilma af Klint’s work sought to visualise the spiritual and scientific realms beyond what is visible to the eye. Her mystical approach will inspire us to “blast apart” traditional figure drawing\, incorporating music\, meditation\, and spiritual exploration to create forms that transcend the physical world.\nLouise Bourgeois (20th Nov): Known for her deeply personal\, symbolic drawings\, Bourgeois used abstraction and symbolism as a means of processing emotions. Her imagery of spiders\, spirals\, and fragmented body parts invites us to tap into our own emotional landscapes. We’ll explore abstraction as a tool for self-expression\, using personal symbols and motifs to create powerful\, emotive drawings.\n\nThroughout the course\, you’ll engage in dynamic drawing exercises that blend observation (from photographs)\, memory\, and imagination\, encouraging you to push the boundaries of what figure drawing can be. Whether you’re seeking to refine your technique or develop a more expressive and imaginative style\, this course will provide the tools and inspiration to take your work to the next level. \nTERM Themed Life Drawing is streamed LIVE via Zoom on London UK time zone. Coordinated and delivered by professional artists Klaire Doyle\, Anna FC Smith\, and guests based in England. \n£13.70 for a single class or £33.22 for all three. \nTo book: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/beyond-representation-drawing-from-life-and-imagination-tickets-1054467413419?aff=oddtdtcreator
