At the core of my art practice there is calligraphy, the love of letters and words. The power, strength, courage, and mystery they can instil. Juxtaposed with this I have a huge spiritual respect for Japanese Zen Calligraphy – especially Enso (Circle of Enlightenment) I love its immediacy, its abstractions, its quality of bringing you into direct and instant involvement with simplicity, space and grace…. The Enso is perhaps the most portrayed subject on Zen Calligraphy… It can represent a host of things relating to enlightenment, emptiness and the universe. It symbolises the cyclical nature of life, the beauty of imperfection and the state of “no-mind” … a direct expression of thusness or this moment as it is… The text included with an Enso is called ‘San’… The San comments on the image; deepening and mystifying and sometimes clarifying the viewers vision, perspective of meaning…
Zen Calligraphy aims to give birth to a thought that is not attached to anything and in doing so gives wings to the mind…
