Emma Saunders

I am a multidisciplinary artist specialising in ceramics, lino print, and assemblage. My practice explores memory and lived experience, using material processes to reflect how moments are held, altered, and re-interpreted over time. Working across three-dimensional forms, printed surfaces, and found objects allows me to move between permanence and fragility, repetition and accumulation.

Ceramics play a central role in my work due to their physical connection to touch, time, and transformation. Clay records every action applied to it, retaining marks, pressures, and imperfections that mirror the way memories are shaped by experience. Through hand-building and surface treatment, I embed traces of process into each piece, allowing objects to function as quiet vessels of remembrance.

Lino print complements this approach through its emphasis on reduction and repetition. The act of carving away material reflects the selective nature of memory—what is removed is as significant as what remains. Printing enables me to revisit imagery and forms, creating subtle variations that echo the way experiences resurface and shift through reflection.

Alongside these practices, I create assemblage works using found and collected objects. These materials often carry their own histories, contributing layers of meaning shaped by use, time, and context. By re-assembling and re-positioning them, I explore how personal and collective memories can be reconstructed and re-imagined.

My work is informed by everyday encounters rather than fixed narratives. I aim to create pieces that invite viewers to bring their own experiences into the work, encouraging contemplation and emotional connection through tactile, familiar materials.
